Coby Parker-Garcia

A native Californian, Coby Parker-Garcia was born and raised in San Luis Obispo. His love for agriculture grew at an early age by working in the family garden.

At Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo he studied Agribusiness Marketing with a minor in Wine and Viticulture. Here he worked long hours on the campus vineyard, developing his grape growing skills and understanding of vineyard management. Coby took advantage of Cal Poly’s Study Abroad program by spending a semester in Europe. Throughout his European (and later on, South American) travels, he fell in love with their native wines and the art of the winemaking behind it.

Shortly after, Coby took a harvest internship with a local winery which only fueled his passion for wine even further.

In 2004, Coby joined the Claiborne & Churchill team as assistant winemaker. Under the guidance of winemaker Clay Thompson, he learned traditional European winemaking techniques, which emphasizes minimal manipulation of both fruit and wine.

Wanting to continue his education of grape growing and winemaking, he took viticulture and enology courses at the University of California Davis. This provided him with the knowledge and insight of modern winemaking techniques.

By 2007, Coby was promoted to head winemaker for Claiborne & Churchill. Today he oversees the entire wine production, their estate vineyards, and works closely with numerous vineyard managers along the Central Coast.

Besides working for Claiborne & Churchill, Coby lends his winery experience to his wife's family vineyard, located in the Russian River, AVA.
