Silver Horse was originally established in 1989. In 1996, the Kroener Family purchased the initial vineyard and winery property and turned it into one of the top wine and event locations in Paso Robles.
Jim and Suzanna Kroener managed the vineyard while their son Stephen was the winemaker, and manager of the tasting room and event facility. For 18 years, Silver Horse winery produced all its red wine from their 80-acre property and surrounding vineyards in northern Paso Robles. All whites were produced from vineyards in San Luis Obispo's Enda Valley. Due to the extreme drought, they decided to sell the property. Jim and Suzanna retired, passing the torch to Stephen. All wine production was
moved to a Barton Family facility on the western side of Paso Robles, where Stephen has a distillery (KROBAR Craft Distillery) with Joe Barton of Grey Wolf Cellars. While wine is made at the westside facility, there was no tasting room for guests and club members to visit. For two years, Stephen searched for the perfect location and, mid-2016, one finally presented itself. The old Santa Fe Schoolhouse in Avila Valley, had become available, so Stephen pounced on the opportunity. Opening
in the fall of 2016, Silver Horse at the Schoolhouse offers wine flights, wines by the glass, excellent club member options, and---on the horizon---a deli, outdoor music and a variety of other seasonal and ongoing events.
