Louisa Lindquist, winemaker, Verdad

Louisa’s wine adventure began at the age of 21, learning the fundamentals of wine production on the east coast at Hargrave Vineyards, Bridgehampton Winery and Scuttlehole Vineyard, now Channing Daughters. She went on to work in every facet of the business, from vineyards to high end restaurants and wine shops to distributor/importer sales. In her wide ranging experience, Louisa became particularly enamored with the beauty and finesse of Spanish Albariño, and power and grace of Tempranillo.

Louisa moved to California in 1992. As she began working with wineries and their vineyards, she was amazed at the similarities between the Spanish wine country and California, and was surprised to find that there was very little Albariño or Tempranillo planted anywhere in the golden state. About the same time, Louisa began dating Bob Lindquist, the owner/winemaker of Qupé Wine Cellars, and introduced him to the beauties of Spanish wines. He counseled her on winemaking techniques. In 2000 Verdad Wine Cellars was established.

Today Verdad Wine Cellars produces Spanish varietal wines from organic and biodynamic grapes under the direction of Louisa. The grapes and resulting wines are minimally handled to reflect the true character of the grape and the unique flavors of these beautiful vineyards.

Louisa and Bob are now married and have a son, Theo. They live in San Luis Obispo where they purchased property in Edna Valley and in 2005 planted it to Rhône and Spanish varieties. Named Sawyer Lindquist Vineyard, it was designated Demeter certified biodynamic and Stellar certified organic in 2009. In 2013 the vineyard was sold to Brook Williams with the understanding she would be able to source grapes from this vineyard ongoing. Brook is committed to keep the vineyard certified biodynamic.

Bob Lindquist, winemaker, Qupe

Mention Syrah and the name Qupé will soon come up. An original Rhône Ranger, veteran winemaker Bob Lindquist was one of the first to advocate American-made Syrah and other Rhône varietals such as Grenache, Roussanne, and Marsanne. He has been a leader in the movement producing world class editions from the Central Coast since the early 1980s and continues his quest with the same zeal he started with. Consequently, Qupé has been deemed one of the Wineries of the Year for Wine & Spirits Magazine - every year since 1999. In March 2015 Bob received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Rhone Rangers. His passion for wine is only equaled by his passion for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
